Quick Tips For Restless Nights

Nothing is more frustrating than being tired but not being able to fall asleep. The tossing. The turning. Neither of which will help you relax and fall asleep. You just end up in a vicious cycle. So, if you have trouble falling asleep at night, check out these potentially calming nighttime tips.

If you’re in bed, and all you do is toss and turn, you might think that it’s best to just stay put and tough it out. But instead of laying in bed, get up and and take a break from trying to fall asleep. Avoid screen time, so keep your iPhone on airplane mode and resist the temptation to watch TV. Instead, read a book or listen to calming music.

Dr. Andrew Weil created a breathing technique that calms the nervous system, and relaxes the body and mind. First, inhale while counting to four. Then, exhale while counting from one to seven. Then, exhale slowly over eight counts. Do this several times before bed each night to help you relax.

On reason why it’s difficult to fall asleep at night is because your mind is racing and won’t shut off. So, have your favorite journal and pen in your bedroom. When your mind is racing, jot down everything that’s keeping you awake or that you’re worried about. Getting it out of your head can make it easier to relax…and usually tires out your eyes.

There are so many herbal remedies to support relaxation. One good place to start is with magnesium. You may be able to find magnesium concentrates that also contain chamomile and clary sage essential oils, which will also help to relieve restlessness and stress.
